A hard blow to the pockets of transporters.
News Colombia.
Since Saturday, August 31, drivers have experienced an increase in the diesel fuel price of 1,904 pesos, a decision made by the Government of President Gustavo Petro, headed by his Minister of Finance and Public Credit, Ricardo Bonilla; and of Mines and Energy, Andrés Camacho.

For Bonilla, the justification for the increase in diesel fuel is based on the fact that subsidizing it is unsustainable for the Government: “The price of diesel fuel has been frozen for 56 months, accumulating an average deficit of $1 billion per month.”
Those 56 billion pesos that were subsidized in that period, says Bonilla, would have served to “invest them in roads, support for the most vulnerable population or in the renewal of the freight vehicle fleet.”
«Currently, when a consumer buys diesel at a gas station, the consumer pays less than 50% of the price charged by the refiner or importer of that fuel. The national government, through the Fepc, pays the rest. This has led to a historic fiscal problem that has represented cumulatively, in 2024 pesos, close to $115 billion»explained the Ministry of Finance.

On Friday morning, a truckers’ strike took place in several cities across the country in protest against the increase in diesel fuel, the fuel used by the country’s transporters to transport agricultural products and merchandise to distribution areas. Many Colombians fear that food and other prices will rise.
However, government experts indicate that the adjustment in the price of diesel would have an impact on inflation of only 0.3 percentage points by the end of 2024.
