MIAMI, United States. — If there is someone whom we must always remember with admiration and gratitude, it is Dr. Diego Medina Hernández. This endearing friend was born with a vocation to do good, either from his humanitarian profession as a doctor or in his fight for the freedom of Cuba, a cause to which he dedicated the best of his life.
Today, many years after his sudden death, like his wife, his children, his siblings and each one of those who through their good deeds learned to love and admire him without duplicity, his colleagues at Alpha 66 feel the pain of having lost him. . It was an unexpected death on July 23, 1999, just at the time we needed it most.
We know that, from the first day we were born, our daily walk, the circumstances that determine the course of our destiny, are determined by the will of God and by the strength of our spirit, as an essential way of helping that magical force. that has been given to us to start walking on peaceful paths or on the sharp edges of adversity. It also happens to the towns.
Diego was consistent with the correct attitude that he had to assume in his obligations as a doctor, in dedication to the cause for the freedom of his captive people, in distributing to everyone —family and friends— the greatest and purest quota of love germinated in the furrows of his heart throughout his life. He complied with God, in gratitude, to that fidelity to good and justice that was entrusted to him. And that valuable legacy of dignity that Diego had the greatness to leave for history makes us trust that now he floats on the wings of heaven, surrounded by flowers and butterflies, with song of nightingales and cooing of white doves as a symbol of that peace. durable that he knew how to conquer for the eternity of his soul, of exquisite transparency.
The fight to which Dr. Diego Medina gave himself body and soul has not ended yet. He is no longer physically with us, but the image of him enduring in our memories now inspires us to continue his example. Our Cuba continues on the cross and we Cubans who love her have no other option but to defend her by fighting to break the chains of slavery that with excessive cruelty, vilely, have been imposed on our brothers and sisters of the country, with no other way of subsisting than under the suffocation of the oppressive boot and the suffering of the most appalling physical and moral miseries.
Kneeling on their knees, those who, in submission or simple cowardice, comply with the humiliating instructions of their masters, are the opposite face of good, of love, of justice. They symbolize the total lack of human dignity, because shamelessness is part of the pettiness and saturation of hatred, of the large share of evil that runs through the veins of those who contribute to oppression, of those who serve tyranny.
For Cuba to achieve happiness, for the doors of progress to open wide once again, for the curtains of freedom to be drawn back once and for all, we need many Cubans, men and women, with the sensitivity and kindness that so much made Dr. Diego Medina flourish, even in adversity.
It is our responsibility to achieve by our own means the long-awaited freedom, because it is the only way to try it with our heads held high, without risking contracting commitments of gratitude that always knot the wings of freedom, without exposing ourselves to lacerating betrayals, submission of our will to political interests alien to the reasons why so many martyrs have given their lives or spent the best of their youth in the darkness of a cell in the filthy prisons of Cuba’s communist tyranny.
Because every moment is good to pay well-deserved honors to one of the great among the great freedom fighters of Cuba, today I wanted to dedicate these words to our endearing Dr. Diego Medina Hernández, words that I have humbly written with the exquisite joy of having been his companion in the struggle, his friend, his soulmate in the love for our people, in the willingness to sacrifice, in the daily revival of faith, of hope, of intransigence in the preservation of the principles that exalt the values of dignity, human values.
Our great José Martí sentenced on one occasion: “Honour, honor”. That is what I have wanted to do with this wonderful man, who continues today, like an inextinguishable beacon, radiating light from the infinity of the sky, showing us the path that leads to freedom.
