Diego García faces charges of between eight and ten years in prison

The Uruguayan player Peñarol Diego García Tomorrow, Tuesday, he will know the verdict of the trial for allegedly raping a woman in 2021, during his time at the Argentine Estudiantes de La Plata, a case for which he faces charges of between eight and ten years of effective prison. The former ‘Pincha’ player, where he served from 2019 to 2022, is prosecuted for the crime of “sexual abuse with carnal access”, he will hear the decision of the Justice, which received requests for eight years of immediate imprisonment by the prosecution and ten years by the complaint.

García returned to the country to participate in the trial before the Oral Criminal Court No. 5 of the city of La Plata, in the province of Buenos Aires, and appeared in his turn to plead, although he did not agree to answer questions.

In his last words, he thanked the soccer clubs that allowed him to continue playing after Estudiantes separated him from the squad weeks after the episode on which judge Ezequiel Medrano will rule this Tuesday.

This Sunday, the 28-year-old forward started for Peñarol in the classic against Nacional in the First Division League of Uruguay that ended in a 2-2 draw, which could have been his last game for the Aurinegro club, where in 2025 he played 46 games, scored 5 goals and provided six assists.

The president of Peñarol, Ignacio Ruglio, declared a few days ago to the Uruguayan media that if the player is convicted, the club will cut his contract and he will be free. “The moment the law declares him guilty, even in the first instance, Peñarol terminates his contract, even if he has appeals. Until today that has not happened, therefore in the law that governs our countries, he is innocent and has the right to work,” Ruglio said last Tuesday.

The case against him began after the complaint of a young woman whose identity is preserved, who in February 2021 accused the footballer of taking her to the bathroom, hitting her and raping her, during a day that ‘Pincha’ players shared with a group of women in a summer residence.

Two months after the attack, the complainant, a former member of Estudiantes, made a charge against the club on her social networks and reported that she had terminated her membership after feeling unprotected by the institution: “If Estudiantes is a school, first teach them to respect women. Be the family they say they are.”
