In March, the average price of the basic food basket rose in all 17 Brazilian capitals analyzed in the National Basic Food Basket Survey, carried out monthly by the Inter-union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese).
The biggest increase occurred in Rio de Janeiro, where the average price of the basket rose 7.65%, followed by Curitiba (7.46%), São Paulo (6.36%) and Campo Grande (5.51%). The smallest change was registered in Salvador (1.46%).
The most expensive basket in the country, in March, was that of São Paulo, where the average price of the products that make up the basket reached R$ 761.19. Then comes the one in Rio de Janeiro, with a cost of R$ 750.71. The lowest value was recorded in Aracaju: R$ 524.99.
Among the items that contributed to the increase in the basket are beans, French bread, manioc flour and soy oil, which were high in all the capitals analyzed in the Dieese survey.
Based on the most expensive basket in the country, registered in São Paulo, Dieese calculated that the minimum wage necessary to cover the expenses of a worker and his family with food, housing, health, education, clothing, hygiene, transport, leisure and social security, would be R$ 6,394.76 in March, which is equivalent to 5.28 times the value of the minimum wage in force in the country, of R$ 1,212.00.
