Didier Deschamps’ contract at the helm of the French team was extended until 2026, announced the Les Bleus coach during the general assembly of the French Football Federation (FBF), this Saturday in Paris.
After joining the French national team in 2012, Deschamps ended his contract after the World Cup in Qatar, where the Bleus reached the final, won by Argentina.
“I want to announce something that is an immense pleasure for me, and it is that my president decided to extend me until 2026″, declared Deschamps in the gallery of the general assembly, where he was received with a loud ovation.
“I thank the president (Noël Le Graët, note) for his permanent support and his confidence maintained”, added. “It is something that is essential in the operation of the French selection”.
Deschamps, who wanted to obtain an extension until the 2026 World Cup (in the United States, Canada and Mexico), thus won the bet when Noël Le Graët he was more in favor of extending his contract until Euro 2024 in Germany.
Deschamps, who won the 1998 World Cup as a coach with France, has the greatest longevity on the bench of Les Bleus ahead of Michel Hidalgo, who spent eight years and six months in office (March 1976 – June 1984), also holding the record for games on the French bench (138, well ahead of Raymond Domenech’s 79) and, above all, the best track record.
Appointed after Euro 2012, where the French team, with Laurent Blanc on the bench, was eliminated by Spain in the quarterfinals, Deschamps straightened out the team’s course: his team reached the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil first, where she was knocked out by future champions Germany (1-0), then guided her team to the lost Euro 2016 final in France (1-0 loss to Portugal) and the world title in Russia, before coming back again. to the final in Qatar 2022.
His only failure took place at Euro 2020, played in 2021, where the Bleus were eliminated in the round of 16 by Switzerland.
