Did Trump refer to María Corina Machado as a “hitman” and “danger to Venezuela”?

In a TikTok video that has circulated on other digital platforms, it is assured – without any support – that the president-elect of the United States will not accept an eventual vice presidency for Machado, in the event that Nicolás Maduro does not take office on January 10, 2025. Trump has not publicly referred to María Corina Machado

Our users ask us to verify a video in which a voice—accompanied by still images or not—spreads supposed “breaking” news about Donald Trump allegedly declaring that he will not respond to a “call for help” from María Corina Machado to promote a transition in Venezuela on January 10, 2025.

According to the video from the account @sidney240620 (with more than 10,300 followers on TikTok), which has also circulated on other digital platforms, Trump accuses the Venezuelan leader of being a “hitwoman (sic) who promotes public disorder and encourages crime.” » in your country.

At one point in the video, Machado is shown making gestures, but it is a manipulation created with Artificial Intelligence.

“I cannot support your call for help to remove Maduro on January 10,” Trump is said to have said in the video. In the event that Machado occupies a position such as the executive vice presidency (an intention that Edmundo González, currently in exile, has expressed, under the hypothesis that he could access power after the election on July 28, 2024), Trump will would consider a “danger” to the stability of Venezuela and the region, always according to the video.

“I do not intend to collaborate with someone who would lead Venezuela to chaos,” the audiovisual material closes with another supposed verbatim quote. Only no video or proof of those words is shown.

The information in the video is false. At least in the public sphere – the area in which we can carry out verifications – there is no record that Trump has explicitly referred to María Corina Machado.

Vote Smart, for example, is an American website with an archive of public statements by Trump and other politicians in that country, in which specific searches can be done by words. To find a public event with Trump in which he mentioned the last name “Machado”, you have to go back to the presidential debates of the 2016 elections. And it was not Trump who said the word Machado, but his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, who He then accused him of sexist and denigrating statements made against… Alicia Machado, former Venezuelan beauty queen.

We do know that the opposition leader (at this time in hiding) congratulated Trump after his victory in the US elections, and that she also showed her satisfaction with the appointment of Marco Rubio as the next secretary of state (equivalent to chancellor ), once the transfer of command to the White House takes place, scheduled for January 20, 2025.

Almost two decades ago, in 2005, María Corina Machado made a famous visit to the White House when George W. Bush, a Republican like Trump, was in power.

The account @sidney240620 mainly spreads propaganda favorable to the government of Nicolás Maduro. It cannot be considered a reliable source of information. He doesn’t even have a biographical profile. A recent report from the organization Probox shows how the ruling party’s disinformation campaigns have been making their own “transition”: from platforms like X to others like TikTok.
