Did María Corina Machado call for a bloodbath, as Tarek William Saab pointed out?

It is false that María Corina Machado has called for a bloodbath, as the Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, said. On the contrary, she described as monstrous the statement by President Nicolás Maduro, according to which if the right wins, “a bloodbath would come.” After learning the results of the CNE in the first minutes of July 29, Machado called for a “vigil of civic celebration until peace prevails.”

Although he did not mention her by name, but indirectly, the Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, said on July 29 that María Corina Machado had called for a bloodbath and now says that everything is normal. But the information is false.

Minutes before the National Electoral Council proclaimed Nicolás Maduro as president-elect, following a fraudulent process, Tarek William announced an investigation into the alleged attack on the CNE’s data transmission system on July 28, the day of the presidential election, perpetrated from North Macedonia and in which Lester Toledo, Leopoldo López (both political leaders in exile) and María Corina Machado, leader of the Venezuelan opposition, were allegedly involved.

Statement from minute 5 with 8 seconds to 6 minutes with 10 seconds

The prosecutor said the following:

«They tried to repeat the farcical theatre of a poor primary election made with cardboard and a pen, where the minutes were just that, completely adulterated. They said that if in a wine cellar, in a lady’s house and we saw how in fact everything was not only a lie, but it served as an alibi for what? As Jesús María Casal and the entire Súmate brotherhood told me, because they had in the National Primary Commission, a private organization outside the law, whose owner is the same person who has called for the bloodbath in his own way and she says now: no, stay calm, everything is normal, we are not going to leave the polling stations, all that dreadful thing that she said in the early hours of today.»

There is no public record that Machado, coordinator of Vente Venezuela, has called for bloodshed, as the Attorney General of the Republic stated. On the contrary, the one who did refer to a bloodbath if the opposition (represented electorally in the Democratic Unitary Platform through Edmundo González Urrutia and María Corina Machado) was President Nicolás Maduro.

During a campaign event in the La Vega parish on July 17, Maduro said: “If they do not want Venezuela to fall into a bloodbath, into a fratricidal civil war produced by the fascists, let us guarantee the greatest success, the greatest victory in the electoral history of our people.”

But the national leader said it again on July 24 at another campaign event ahead of the presidential elections on July 28: “I said that if the extremist right (…) came to political power in Venezuela, there would be a bloodbath. I did not tell lies, I only made a reflection. Whoever is scared, should take a chamomile tea.”

Maduro is the one who has mentioned a bloodbath if the opposition wins, to which Machado responded – in response to a question from Andreína Flores, from Radio France Internationale: “That is a monstrosity and a lie and I wonder… who is it directed at? Because that no longer has any effect on Venezuelans, none. That threat that we had to resign ourselves and submit to abuse, to totalitarianism because the other option was violence, no longer has any effect. Here fear has been defeated. Nicolás Maduro and the regime have been defeated in the hearts, in the soul and in the streets of Venezuela. Even the political defeat has already been confirmed, in the sense that Venezuelans – in an immense majority – know that we are going to win.”

Result

It is false, then, that María Corina Machado called for a bloodbath, as prosecutor Tarek William Saab said in a press conference after the July 28 elections, and even less so as indicated by “that horrible thing she said in the early hours of today.” There, when she addressed the country after the fraudulent results announced by the CNE, she spoke of a “vigil of civic celebration in which we continue tonight and will continue until peace prevails.”
