The Minister of the Environment, Robert Bouvier, revealed in an interview on Sarandí radio that the project in collaboration with Google will not be carried out as originally planned.
During the show, Bouvier reported that the original project proposed by Google has been withdrawn and, at this time, There are no concrete advances that can be mentioned in relation to the company. “We cannot talk about Google because there is nothing concrete, the original project is on hold”, stated the Minister.
Bouvier explained that he had held meetings with Google representatives to discuss the details of the project, but currently they do not have a specific Google project to evaluate. When asked about the reasons that led to the suspension of the project, the Minister emphasized the need to obtain an accurate response directly from the technology company.
Although the specific details of the project in question were not disclosed, this news is surprising since a fruitful collaboration between the Ministry of Environment and Google was expected to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable practices.
Google’s version of his arrival in Uruguay is different
From the technological giant of American origin, the version is different and it is not confirmed that they have completely rejected carrying out the project in Uruguay.
“The Uruguay data center project is still in an exploratory phase and the Google technical team is actively working with the support of national and local authorities. As the planning and design process of the potential project progresses, it is expected that preliminary metrics (such as projected water consumption) will undergo adjustments. Uruguay is an important innovation hub in the region and we have a strong commitment to the country,” says a statement circulated in the media.
“Regarding its environmental approval, the project applied only to obtain its Environmental Viability of Location (VAL), and it has yet to go through the stages of Prior Environmental Authorization (AAP) and Environmental Operation Authorization (AAO). These instances involve an in-depth analysis of the characteristics of the data center that must be submitted for approval by the authorities and a public consultation phase,” continued Google.
“At Google, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, and the way we design and manage our data centers is no exception. Our commitment to responsible use of water and the protection of the environment for a more sustainable future are fundamental in all the countries in which we are present. We continue to redouble our efforts to raise our water management standards in the communities where we operateand we recently published our annual water consumption metrics at each of our US data center locations and made a commitment to share those corresponding to the rest of the global locations in our 2023 Environmental Report”, concludes the statement in question.
