The regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo began to make changes to the Nicaraguan Red Cross, entity that from 1934 to May 10, 2023, was a non-profit and impartial organization.
In a recent publication on its official Facebook page, the CRN, which is now administered by the Ministry of Health (Minsa), reported the new bank accounts so that people who process their driver’s license can make the respective payment.

“The Nicaraguan Red Cross informs Nicaraguan families about the new accounts where they can make their payments for driver’s license exams before the Transit authorities,” the information details, with the usual phrases and logo of the Ortega regime.
Now people, who wish to process their driver’s license, must make the respective payments for psychological, visual and blood tests, through government accounts.
This action by the Ortega y Murillo administration is similar to what it has done against universities, mostly private, which it confiscated and passed on to the CNU regime, doing “its whim” in administrative areas and fee payments. .
On May 10, the National Assembly of Nicaragua, totally controlled by Daniel Ortega, unanimously approved the initiative of the “Law to Repeal Legislative Decree No. 357 of October 29, 1958” with which it eliminates the Nicaraguan Red Cross, as an autonomous entity; and ordered that all the assets of the relief institution pass into the hands of the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

The initiative was presented “urgently” by Ortega deputies Gustavo Porras, Edwin Castro, Alejandro Ferreti, Gladys Baéz, María Haydee Osuna and Loria Raquel Dixon, who, in a document “explanatory reasons” accuse the Cruz Nicaraguan Red of “attacking the peace and stability” of Nicaragua.
«The Nicaraguan Red Cross Association is governed by the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, among which are included: humanity, impartiality, neutrality. In the acts that occurred in 2018 that threatened the peace and stability of the nation, some affiliates of this Association acted against these principles and its Constitutive Act and Statutes; and the association itself transgressed the laws of the country by disregarding and even supporting this act of its subsidiaries”, reads the explanatory statement of the decree of Law.
The Ortega dictatorship practically accused the Red Cross of attending and providing first aid to injured and dead citizens during the 2018 social protests, which were repressed by police and paramilitaries.
Experts fear that the Red Cross will change its vision and mission and become, in the first instance, a business for the Ortega government and lack impartiality, denying service to people it considers political adversaries.
