Díaz-Canel travels to Belize in the first visit of a Cuban president to the country

(EFE) to Belize, the first of a Cuban president to the country.

“Belize welcomes Miguel Díaz-Canel”, highlighted the Government of Belize on its social networks, before the arrival of Díaz-Canel, which included a bilateral meeting with Briceño, and the signing of two agreements.

“Belize condemns the unjustified designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism in the face of which there is no legal or moral justification for Cuba to remain,” Briceño said.

The Prime Minister of Belize was full of praise for the Henry Reeve Cuban Medical Brigade that arrived in Belize in January 2022 as part of the bilateral cooperation to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

In this sense, he stressed that the visit of the Cuban president was another symbol of the deep bonds of friendship that exist between the two nations and peoples, based on mutual respect and the principles of International Law.

“Belize congratulates Cuba for advocating for others in the slowing world in its various functions, such as the fundamental role it plays as president of the group of 77 and China at the United Nations,” Briceño stressed.

Díaz-Canel highlighted that more than 1,000 Cubans have provided services to Belize since the 1990s, when the Cuban medical brigade attended this region for the first time.

He also stressed that “these actions take place in the face of a financial, commercial, unfair and illegal embargo imposed by the United States.”

Briceño concluded his speech by thanking Cuba for the “transformative impact on the growth and development of developing countries in the world, including Belize.”

For his part, the Cuban president, who left Belmopan, the Belizean capital shortly after four in the afternoon on Sunday, said he felt honored to be the first Cuban head of state to visit Belize.

In this context, Díaz-Canel highlighted that more than 1,000 Cubans have provided services to Belize since the 1990s, when the Cuban medical brigade attended this region for the first time.

The Cuban president also thanked Belize for its support for the Resolution against the economic, commercial and financial blockade, presented each year at the United Nations.

Cuba maintains cooperative relations with Belize since the establishment of diplomatic relations on July 15, 1995.

Last December, Díaz-Canel also starred in the first visit by a Cuban president to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a country that, like Belize, is a member of the Caribbean Community (Caricom).

During the visit, the president also praised Caricom for its support to end the economic embargo that the United States has maintained for decades against Cuba.

“Cuba does not feel alone. Every day we receive the encouragement and support of friendly peoples and governments that express their solidarity and you are an example of a small nation that continually embraces us with gestures of generosity,” he said, referring to Saint Vincent. and the Grenadines.

On those dates, Díaz-Canel also participated in the eighth summit between Caricom and Cuba, held in Barbados, where the leaders of the Caribbean countries demanded the “immediate cessation” of the economic embargo.

Caricom is made up of Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.
