“We addressed our differences and issues of common interest. The shared will to improve bilateral relations was ratified,” Díaz-Canel said on Twitter, when receiving the congressmen. In another message, he affirmed that he expressed “the need to put an end to measures that harm the Cuban population.”

Democrats James McGovern, Mark Pocan and Troy Anthony Carter also exchanged with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez. In a tweet, Rodríguez pointed out that in the “open and respectful” meeting both parties “verified” the “common interest in moving towards a constructive relationship.”

In turn, the website of the Cuban Parliament reported that in the meeting on Friday with the deputies, McGovern affirmed that “a common goal is to work with a view to both governments normalizing their relations.” “We want to work together with you to tear down the walls, to have a more mature and constructive relationship for the benefit of the peoples of Cuba and the United States,” he said.

The congressman, who also chairs the Committee on Rules of the House of Representatives, considered that “both nations must find ways to work, beyond differences, on issues of mutual interest.”

The three democrats also exchanged with the president of the National Assembly, Esteban Lazo, (unicameral Parliament) and toured the Capitol located in the heart of Havana that serves as the seat of the Cuban legislative body.

They also “emphasized the broad potential for bilateral cooperation in sectors such as health, biotechnological and pharmaceutical, and academic, among others”

Lazo highlighted “the importance of these meetings, with a view to continuing to strengthen dialogue and inter-parliamentary relations on the basis of mutual respect,” added the source. Other Cuban assembly members who participated in the exchange called for the end of the embargo, criticized the “intensification” of economic sanctions against their country and denounced the inclusion of Havana in a list of countries that do not respect religious freedoms.

They also “emphasized the broad potential for bilateral cooperation in sectors such as health, biotechnological and pharmaceutical, and academic, among others,” according to the report.

At the end of November, a bipartisan delegation from the United States Congress made up of three members of its agricultural committee met in Havana with the Cuban Vice President, Salvador Valdés, representatives and Cuban producers.

These visits reflect the increase in public exchange between the two countries registered in recent months on issues such as migration, trade and disaster assistance.

Although still far from the levels of the so-called “thaw” promoted by former presidents Barack Obama (United States) and Raúl Castro (Cuba), in recent times there have been some gestures and signs in both directions, according to experts.
