Díaz-Canel on Summit of the Americas: “I can assure you that I will not attend”

MIAMI, United States.- Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel said this Wednesday that he will not attend the Summit of the Americas, which will be held next June in Los Angeles, California, the agency reported. ap news.

The decision was reported this Thursday after weeks of a controversy unleashed between some Latin American governments after it was reported that Washington could leave several countries in the region, including the island, out of the meeting.

“In the conditions in which all these processes related to the summit have taken place and due to the attitude maintained by the government of the United States, I can assure you that I will not attend,” Díaz-Canel said during a meeting of the Council of Ministers that It took place this Wednesday and was reported until Thursday by the official website Cubadebate.

The Summit of the Americas will take place between June 6 and 10, and according to US authorities the official invitations have not been sent yetbut they were studying not to convene nations that Washington does not consider democratic, such as Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Countries including Mexico, Argentina and Bolivia expressed displeasure at the possible exclusion, leading US officials to suggest last week that the island might have some low-key representation.

“From the original design by the United States government, from its initial intention, it was proposed that the Summit not be inclusive. And it was his intention to exclude several countries, including Cuba, despite the existing strong regional demand that exclusions in this type of event be put to an end,” Díaz-Canel said.

The Cuban dictator’s announcement comes one day before the meeting of leaders of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), a regional mechanism that brings together a dozen nations allied with Cuba and Venezuela.
