Díaz-Canel leads military exercises in Cuba amid tensions with the US

Miguel Díaz-Canel led a series of military exercises this Saturday accompanied by senior military officials, in another day dedicated to activities to defend the country amid tensions with the United States.

“This (the military exercises) takes on relevant importance at the current time (…) based on the entire hegemonic offensive that the United States government is developing,” said Díaz-Canel, referring to Washington’s attack on January 3 in Caracas that ended with the fall of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

The Cuban leader witnessed a demonstrative tactical exercise in a tank unit in Havana, then shared with university students in shooting practices and other “combat actions,” and also visited an anti-aircraft defense unit, Presidential Press reported.

“For us, this level of preparation that you are developing in these times is very important, because we have to truly prepare,” said Díaz-Canel, who holds the position of president of the National Defense Council (CDN).

This was the third consecutive Saturday dedicated to the country’s defense activities after the US military operation on January 3.

These exercises include ambush rehearsals and training for the installation of mines, protection of the population and combined classes in areas such as military health, defense against weapons of mass extermination, and others.

Last week, the CDN approved the “plans and measures” to usher in the “State of War,” although state media did not offer details of them.

Two weeks after the US attacks on Venezuela, the Government of Havana has reinforced its verbal confrontation with Washington. In one of the tribute acts to the soldiers who died in Caracas, Díaz-Canel stated that “there is no surrender or surrender possible” in the face of a possible attack by the United States.
