The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, assured that “Latin America and the Caribbean is no one’s backyard, we are sovereign countries,” regarding the expansionist plans of the United States in the region.
During his speech at the XXV Alba-TCP Virtual Summit, Díaz-Canel stated that “the Monroe doctrine came out of the closet” and “as in the past, imperialism believes that it has the power to impose itself on the independence of peoples, threatening with the use of force, in what they call their backyard.”
«The new national security strategy of the United States, last November, incorporates an even more aggressive and offensive approach to that ancient, but very dangerous doctrine. Latin America and the Caribbean is not anyone’s backyard or even front yard. “We are sovereign States,” he emphasized.
In that sense, he assured that the greatest demonstration of these imperialist plans is evident in the military deployment in the Caribbean, which directly threatens all countries in the region, especially Venezuela.
“They reveal a hegemonic and criminal purpose that should put all the peoples and governments of the continent on alert,” he stated.
Cuba condemns act of US piracy against oil tanker
Díaz-Canel, representing the people of Cuba, strongly condemned the act of piracy committed by the US against an oil tanker in the Caribbean, whose oil was property of Venezuela.
«We also denounce the recent assault of an oil tanker by the United States military forces that irrefutably demonstrates the true intentions of this deployment. “We strongly condemn this vile act of piracy and theft of the resources of the Venezuelan people, which constitutes a serious violation of international law against property, as well as the principles of freedom of navigation and free trade,” he stated.
Likewise, he stressed that “countries are free and sovereign, so they have the right to use their natural resources and wealth.”
Effects of climate change
The president of Cuba took advantage of the opportunity to raise his voice in defense of Mother Earth and warned about the effects of climate change.
«Climate change is not the result of a conspiracy theory, nor is it part of a left-wing plan to generate states of opinion, as some try to demonstrate. Climate change is a reality and the examples we have in the region and around the world demonstrate it,” he noted.
Regarding this issue, I send words of solidarity to the countries that, like Cuba, were affected by Hurricane Melissa and assured that this natural phenomenon is a product of this climate change.
