Díaz-Canel denies imprisonment of minors for 11J

Madrid Spain.- Cuban dictator Miguel Díaz-Canel denied this Saturday the imprisonment of minors on the island for the popular demonstrations of July 11 and 12, 2021.

“It is a lie that there is someone under 16 in prison,” said the president during a radio interview with the Argentine political scientist Atilio Borón, who is in Cuba participating in the International Book Fair (FIL) in Havana.

According to the Spanish news agency EFE, Díaz-Canel also stated: “Those who committed crimes, fundamentally violent ones, have been prosecuted. No one has been prosecuted for speaking out against the revolution. That is a lie”.

Regarding the trials against the 11J protesters, the president said that “they have been carried out with full respect for the law, with all the guarantees and with total cleanliness and transparency”, as well as indicating that only “a minimum number” of the participants in anti-government protests has been prosecuted.

However, Prisoners Defenders denounced recently before the United Nations Organization the violation of children’s rights in Cuba, based on an investigation of 36 minors prosecuted within the framework of the demonstrations on July 11, 2021.

“Of these, 22 are the cases that we analyze under a detailed complaint. 14 additional cases are briefly listed and identified by the time for the preparation of this complaint, given the 7-day notice for it. However, the cases of the 14 alleged minors prosecuted and under various deprivations of liberty are very similar to those studied in depth. The ages range from 13 years to 17 years,” the organization specified.

At the beginning of this month, Prisoners Defenders also registered 1,024 political prisoners in Cuba from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, who are in prison with judicial convictions and dispositions of the prosecution without judicial intervention. Of these, 891 are imprisoned for their participation in the anti-government demonstrations of 11J.
