Dialogue to reopen borders between Venezuela and the ABC Islands was postponed at the end of January

The Prime Minister of Curaçao, Gilmar Pisas, pointed out the importance of reopening the borders with Venezuela and said that he will work for that to materialize soon. He explained that the meeting, scheduled for Monday, January 9, was postponed for reasons beyond his control and that it was rescheduled for the week of the 30th of the same month.

The Minister of General Affairs of Curaçao reported that the talks between the administration of Nicolás Maduro and the islands of Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire (ABC islands), which are under the protectorate of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, were postponed until the week of 30 January.

According to the portal News CuraçaoIt was planned that the Prime Minister of that country, Gilmar Pisas, would have a conversation with Venezuelan officials on Monday, January 9, but they did not take place. According to the prime minister, nothing could be done about it to avoid postponing the meeting and he said that the reason is beyond his reach; which suggests that this situation was on the part of Venezuela.

He stressed that reopening borders is important for both Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire and ratified that everything possible will be done for the meeting with Venezuelan officials to materialize and recover that space, closed since 2019.

The ABC islands and the Netherlands clarify that what they are looking for is a gradual opening of the borders with Venezuela and clarify that these decisions do not want to imply that the electoral results in the South American country are recognized.

At the beginning of October 2022, the Prime Minister of Aruba, Evelyn Wever-Croes, denounced that the administration of the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, contacted her to ask her to announce an upcoming reopening of the border between the two countries as a preamble to an eventual return. to the negotiating table, an action that was emphatically rejected from the island.

“The Venezuelan authorities recently asked us to make a statement that the border is going to be opened and then sit down at the table to negotiate. That’s not how we work,” Wever-Croes clarified then.

In his opinion, negotiations must first be carried out and the terms in which the border between Aruba and Venezuela will be opened before making the announcement, where security and responsibility for both countries are guaranteed.

The border between Venezuela and the ABC Islands was closed in 2019 after the then president of the National Assembly elected in 2015, Juan Guaidó, who was then heading an interim government, sought to introduce humanitarian aid into the country from all borders; including Curacao, where there was a ship with supplies to help people.

Another thing that has affected the closure of borders has been the alleged smuggling of strategic material from Venezuela to the ABC islands, as well as the increase in the migratory flow.
