Diabetes doubles the risk of death from COVID-19

A team of British researchers found that people with diabetes are twice as likely to die from Covid-19, although good control of blood sugar levels can help mitigate the risks, according to a study recently published in the journal Endocrinology Diabetes and Metabolism, which was broadcast by radio Ñandutí.

For the research, data from 158 previous studies involving more than 270,000 participants from around the world were analyzed. The collected results showed that patients with diabetes were 1.87 times more likely to die from covid-19 and 1.59 times more likely to be admitted to the ICU.

The study was not limited to examining the risk of people with diabetes contracting covid-19 from a biological point of view, but also took into account variables such as the location of the patient and the available health care options.

Thus, the researchers concluded that patients from China, South Korea or the Middle East had a higher risk of death than those from countries of the European Union or the USA.
