Devil’s Throat reopens in Iguazú Falls after the rains

Hoy Paraguay

“Both the footbridges and the viewpoint will be enabled for visitors, after an extraordinary flood,” said the concessionaire company of the Iguazú National Park this Tuesday.

The pedestrian walkway to the viewpoint had been closed four days ago as a result of the currents caused by heavy rains in northeastern Argentina and southern Brazil.

“People were very surprised by the flow of water. We came from a drought. A very small sector of the walkway has already been repaired,” park ranger Rodrigo Castillo told AFP.

The security measure was taken when the water flow reached 12,000 cubic meters per second. The Iguazú River, which feeds the Falls, normally has between 1,500 and 2,000 cubic meters of flow per second.

Due to the last drought, “the flow had dropped to 500 cubic meters per second,” explained Castillo.

In 2014, a flood greater than the current one destroyed large sections of the walkways, which were rebuilt on steel structures.

The force of the waterfall had also forced the suspension of boat rides that take tourists to the foot of the largest waterfalls through a river course.

The mighty Falls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They have 275 jumps. 80% of the waterfalls are located on the Argentine lake and the rest on the Brazilian side, in the middle of a landscape of subtropical jungle and conservation parks for native fauna and flora.
