Despite the insistence of La Moneda, a survey by Chile 21 reveals that 57% reject militarization of the Mapuche conflict zone

A survey by Fundación Chile 21 revealed that 57% of the people consulted do not agree with the extension of the state of exception in the provinces of the Mapuche conflict, and only 43% responded that they support this measure that the Government seeks to extend to other fifteen days in consultation with Congress.

The survey was released just after the incident that occurred on route P-72, which links the communes of Cañete and Tirúa, where a confrontation between Carabineros personnel and the Navy with Mapuche community members ended with one death and three people injured. In this sense, it is important to note that the survey did not consider the situation that occurred in the province of Arauco.

The result of the survey coincides with what various sectors have demanded, especially the opposition and conventional sectors with reserved seats, which have demanded to lift the militarization of the Mapuche area. The president of the Convention Elisa Loncon yesterday called directly to the parliamentarians not to approve the extension of the state of emergency. “Repudiate the actions of militarization, the government’s policy of violence and repudiate the violence that has engulfed our communities in these grave circumstances. Also call the parliamentarians so that they do not approve a new installation of the emergency law in the area, “he said.

In addition, yesterday a score of conventionalists delivered a letter in La Moneda, addressed to President Sebastián Piñera, demanding the “end of the state of emergency, cessation of violence and militarization.”

However, previously, President Sebastián Piñera also referred to this fact, who stressed that it is about terrorist acts and drug trafficking: “These organizations, using violence and weapons of war, threaten the lives of civilians, police and seek to sow terror among citizens. “

In addition, in the opinion of the President, these facts are reason enough for Congress to approve the request for an extension of the State of Exception that governs the provinces of Bío Bío and Arauco in the Bío Bío Region, and the provinces of Malleco and Cautín in the Araucanía Region. In fact, the Executive yesterday entered the letter to Congress requesting the extension of the measure.

In the opinion of Eduardo Vergara, director of Chile 21, “the Government has dangerously abused constitutional exceptionality, it already did so during the pandemic, abusing it as an oxygen tank to govern. Now it does so in the macro zone with consequences dangerous that will end up increasing violence “.

“The majority of citizens do not want this to continue spreading, since they see the consequences. This information is tremendously relevant, since Congress today has the responsibility, to first demand accountability for the days that have passed, as at at the same time the opposition to put a stop to this historical error, “he added.

Despite the insistence of La Moneda, a survey by Chile 21 reveals that 57% reject militarization of the Mapuche conflict zone

On Wednesday, Interior Minister Rodrigo Delgado gave details of this event, noting that there were two events, one at 2:00 p.m. and another at 6:00 p.m., which he described as “terrorist attacks.” The first situation “is basically related to a bus stop that is shot down by people who were trying to block the route, they put an accelerator on that bus stop and create a barricade, putting forceful elements to block the route.”

“It is in this context where the mixed patrol between Carabineros and the Navy (…) Carabineros initially approaches in that patrol, and is attacked with firearms (…) and at that time they use dissuasive means such as tear gas canisters and other non-lethal means “. Later, he argued that “a Navy patrol arrived, the Navy would have used ammunition to dissuade these people, who were attacking the Carabineros and the Navy caravan with heavy caliber weapons, and when they stopped using the weapons of save, use service weapons, and manage to clear the route. “

Then, at 6:00 p.m., the second confrontation was recorded “in a neighboring sector, a Navy patrol is attacked again with high-caliber weapons, and in this context, service weapons are used (…) two detainees, and those detainees were carrying large-caliber weapons, large-caliber ammunition, we are in the presence of ambush attacks “.

On the other hand, the governor of Biobío, Rodrigo Díaz fears that this fact means an escalation of violence, since “in general, when acts of violence have occurred in the area they are followed by a spiral of violence and each time there has been this it gets worse when there is no certainty about what the truth of the facts is. The population, the majority of normal people who live in the territory, aspire to live in peace and what we want is to know what happened. “

For this reason, the governor demanded that the Public Ministry carry out a thorough investigation on the matter. “It is important to avoid a spiral of violence resulting from this situation, agility, precision, objectivity and resolution by the Public Ministry,” he said on Tele 13 Radio.

The Prosecutor’s Office has taken action on the matter, and yesterday decided not to go to a detention control hearing or formalization before the Cañete Guarantee Court of two of the detainees, aged 21 and 15, because “it was not possible to gather evidence sufficient to allow the Prosecutor’s Office to formulate charges against them. ”Thus, only José Llempi Machacán (21), brother of the deceased in the events recorded on the road that connects Cañete with Tirúa, was formalized. the crimes of reception and illegal possession of ammunition, resulting in total house arrest.

Review the completed survey.
