The deputy for Social Convergence, Gonzalo Winter, indicated that the government program of the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, must adapt to reality, but that this will not affect expectations within the Executive.
In a conversation with La Tercera, Winter indicated that “agreeing with the center-left and accepting the conditions of the terrain that we have inherited is part of the possibility that our program will actually be executed. And with that I want to be very clear: I approve of Dignity, and in particular the Broad Front, is not a coalition that intends to set itself up as the guardian of the doctrine, nor of the symbols of the left, nor change the world by radically enunciating certain slogans. What we want is for our program to be effectively executed, since whether in four, in eight, or in 10 years”.
Along the same lines, he emphasized that “within the coalition, I don’t really see a problem with expectations, but the program must be adapted to the times set by reality.”
“Most of the structural reforms proposed by President Boric’s program are not the occurrence of the last meeting of the political committee, but have been marked in the programs of the left and the center-left for 10, 20 or 30 years. The desires of the progressive forces are not exhausted by what a government or its coalition can do in 1,500 days,” he said.
In this sense, Winter addressed the statements of the Segpres minister, Giorgio Jackson, who declared that the government program is consistent with what will happen in the plebiscite, emphasizing that “President Boric’s government will govern the country until 11 March 2026 no matter what.”
In any case, he recognized that there are “some reforms that do clash with the current Constitution. There are other reforms that are being made, that are possible, but they are more difficult with the Constitution. And there are others that should not conflict.”
“Governments are not only executors of their program, they are also people who have to take charge of reality and the terrain where the respective battles take place. And be careful, when we say that the program will have to adapt, it is not something so novel what I am saying”, he addressed.
“By the time I Approve Dignity wins 23% of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate is tied, we all know that we are going to have to generate concessions in order to execute our program,” he concluded.
