Deputy denounces oil spill that contaminates fauna of Maturín

A vast morichal that surrounds a large part of Maturín is in danger due to constant exposure to oil residues that even threaten the health of the population of La Pica, a Monaguense community

The deficiencies in the infrastructure of the Venezuelan oil industry continue to cause a negative impact on the country’s ecosystems, as denounced by the deputy to the National Assembly elected in 2015, María Gabriela Hernánez.

The parliamentarian published a video in which she shows how the diluted crude oil reached a morichal stream that surrounds La Pica, a sector of Maturín, Monagas state.

This ecosystem had already been the victim of an oil spill that spread to the area five years ago. On that occasion, the fact was also registered by the deputy, who lambasted the Government for not taking the necessary measures so that these accidents would not be repeated.

“These ecosystems that help mitigate the greenhouse gases generated by PDVSA are killed for not making objections to the problems reported four years ago,” Hernández explained. on his Twitter account.

He explained that the morichales —small floodplain forests that form in the plain— are among the most fragile ecosystems in nature and are being affected by oil spills that even threaten their existence.

In this case, the morichal is also vital for the community of La Pica and surrounds a large part of Maturín. It is not only a natural stronghold for the local population, but also a recreational space for the residents of La Pica.

“The Morichal surrounds the entire city of Maturín, it is an important source of life and identifies the citizen of La Pica, who comes to have fun, fish or wash clothes,” he said.

On the other hand, he pointed out that the population of La Pica has problems with the water supply, which could be solved with the help of the marichal, but rather there is a risk of losing it if PDVSA does not do the corresponding restoration work. .

“This is the water that goes to the underground that would make the population of La Pica have water in their homes again. If PDVSA does not properly restore this ecosystem, the inhabitants of La Pica will not be able to drink water, not even from their morichal,” he added.
