Deputies propose to call Fidel Castro and “Che” Guevara Salons of the CDMX Congress

Deputies propose to call Fidel Castro and "Che" Guevara Salons of the CDMX Congress

The initiative is presented after the authorities of the Mayor’s Office Cuauhtémoc withdrew the sculptures of the “Che” and Fidel of a garden in the Tabacalera neighborhood.

To this is added the proposal of Mayor Alessandra Red de la Vega to auction this work (“meeting”) and the request of the capital government so that the pieces are returned to relocate them in another space.

According to the document published Wednesday at the Parliamentary Gazette, the Petista deputy Ernesto Villarreal and the Morena coordinator in the local legislature, Xochitl Bravothey presented to the Board of Directors an initiative with a decree project so that the rooms of floors two and three of the building are called Ernesto “Che” Guevara and Fidel Castro Ruz.

Both legislators justify the appointment as a way of transcending the situation and controversy and that the historical fact is claimed: the first meeting in Mexico City between Castro and Guevara, in July 1955.

The morenista and the petista assured the appointment of the halls seeks to recognize the crucial role of Mexico City in Latin American historical events.

“By ignoring or distorting this part of our history, the stories that constitute us as a society are impoverished and the opportunity to recognize the legacy of an era in which, from this city, alternatives to the hegemonic models of power were forged.” Read in the document.

The proposal will be presented this Wednesday at the session of the Permanent Commission of the capital Congress and sent to the Commission for Regulations, Studies and Parliamentary Practices, where it will begin its process of analysis and ruling before passing into full for its vote

Mayor of Cuauhtémoc responds.

Through her social networks, the mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, criticized the intention of both legislators to appoint the halls of the administrative building to pay tribute to Guevara and Castro.

He suggested that the names of heroines be used, such as that of the “seeking mothers” or that of “Matilde Montoya”, the first surgeon in Mexico.

After the withdrawal of the statues of Fidel Castro and Ernesto Guevara, the mayor of Cuauhtémoc said that they would be auctioned, starting from its approximate cost of 600,000 pesos, which were paid by the demarcation authority in 2018. He said that, with the resource obtained, the same park of the Tobaca colony where they were located would be improved.

In response, the head of government, Clara Brugada, said that the mayor’s proposal does not proceed, since the work was withdrawn without the authorization of the central government and breaches with the powers and powers of the mayorships.

“The mayors have no powers to make auctions or to sell their … Nothing! Then, I think that is very important, something that must be taken into account and I am sure that we are going to agree so that the city can recover the sculptures, together with the federal government.” affirmed.
