A group of deputies, from different political sectors, informally requested that the Senate lend its spaces for a possible new Constitutional Convention. This, after the previous constituent body occupied the sector of the Lower House and only part of that corresponding to the Senate.
“The half that was lent for the CC was that of the House, not that of the Senate. Therefore, I proposed in a committee meeting that, since we had to fix it, paint it, improve it, and we are going to start using it again, when there is a new CC, which I hope there will be, it will work in the other half. One CC you, one me, and we hope it will be the last one,” said the deputy Jorge Alessandri (UDI) in conversation with emmol.
the deputy Gael Yeomans (CS) commented that “it would be a positive sign that from the Senate this time there is also availability to make its dependencies of the former Congress available. Logically, everything is pending regarding the fact that the negotiation is not over yet regarding how the body is going to be , but I think it will be positive that this time there is more willingness”.
For his part, the deputy Eric Aedo (DC) commented that “if it is a smaller number of people than the old CC was, we believe that it would be interesting that this time the Senate makes the gesture to that Convention and welcomes the ex-National Congress in the halls and in its area to the new body, as the Chamber of Deputies did the previous time”.
“The citizenry has given a remarkable example this September 4 by rejecting that constitutional text and that allowed the maintenance of the Senate as we know it today. Perhaps one way to repay the Senate to the citizenry is precisely by making it available to the new CC halls, spaces and areas in the former Congress”, he continued.
Meanwhile, the deputy Francisco Undurraga (Evópoli) indicated that “without being hateful, I believe that indeed if the body that decides to write the new constitutional proposal is made up of fewer people, undoubtedly it would be desirable for the Senate to be able to lend its facilities, given that we we lend and facilitate our facilities for the previous process”.
Let us remember that former conventionalists denounced in November 2021 being “overcrowded” in the rooms of the Chamber of Deputies of the former Congress, pointing out that the Senate did not lend its spaces.
In the following months, the Convention and the Senate expanded the agreements, so that the former constituents were able to occupy spaces in the Upper House. However, they questioned that they did not have offices or spaces to store their belongings, unlike parliamentarians.
The deputies, meanwhile, will return at the beginning of November of this year to the spaces of the Lower House in the former Congress, with the objective of meeting in commissions on Mondays.
After the triumph of the Rejection in the plebiscite of September 4, political parties with parliamentary representation are carrying out dialogues to continue with the constituent process. Although the conversations are advancing, the collectivities have not yet reached a point of consensus.
