Deputies approve new Criminal Procedure Code and avoid legal vacuum days before the constitutional deadline

Diputados aprueban nuevo Código Procesal Penal y evitan vacío legal a días del plazo constitucional

SANTO DOMINGO.– The Chamber of Deputies approved in second reading the bill that establishes the new Criminal Procedure Code of the Dominican Republic, a piece expanded to almost 500 articles and considered essential to avoid an imminent legal vacuum.

The vote closed with 111 votes in favor and only 3 against, guaranteeing approval in the Chamber less than eight days before the deadline set by the Constitutional Court, which ordered Congress to approve a new code before December 11. If not, the current one would be outside the legal system.

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, highlighted the effort made to complete the necessary modifications: “Today we continue with this situation and we hope to deliver the best possible piece to the country. All staff have worked hard to incorporate what was approved.”

The project, presented to the Senate by the legislators Omar FernandezAntonio Taveras, Cristóbal Castillo and Felix Bautistayou must now go through two readings in the Upper House. If it does not receive changes, it will be sent to the Executive Branch for promulgation.
