MIAMI, United States. — A group of 94 Cuban rafters was returned to Cuba today in a US Coast Guard vessel, that entity reported today in a release.
The migrants, who had been intercepted throughout the week, were repatriated by the crew of the Coast Guard cutter Paul Clark.
Cuban deportation operations have increased considerably since the US authorities decided to strengthen maritime surveillance in the Florida Strait.
The note contains statements by Lieutenant Connor Ives, of the Coast Guard District Seven, who called on Cubans not to risk their lives at sea.
“Going to sea in overloaded rustic boats is dangerous and unsafe. Please use a safe and legal means to come to the United States,” the officer noted.
This Friday the Coast Guard had reported on the deportation of other 270 migrants from the Caribbean island intercepted in recent days.
The Coast Guard reminds Cubans living in the United States that they should contact their local representative to obtain information about relatives who have been detained by the authorities trying to reach the country illegally.
The majority of Cubans who are intercepted trying to reach US territory by sea are taken into the custody of the authorities and then deported to their country of origin.
During fiscal year 2022, the Coast Guard repatriated 6,182 Cuban migrants, the highest number recorded in the last seven years.
The upward trend of rafters continues during the current fiscal year. In the first week of October alone, more than 200 Cubans were returned to the island.
