The São Paulo State Department of Health confirmed the second case of mpox (formerly called monkeypox) from the lp group in the state. This is a 39-year-old man, resident of Portugal, who presented his first symptoms at the end of December in Brazil, sought care at the Instituto de Infectologia Emílio Ribas, in São Paulo, and remained hospitalized there for a day. He has already returned to his country of origin.
“To date, there is no record of people with symptoms among the contacts identified at the patient’s place of accommodation,” said the secretariat, in a note.
In 2025, the first case of mpox from the lp group was registered in SP, in a 29-year-old woman, who progressed to cure. The mpox of the lp group is more aggressive and can be lethal.
Mpox is a disease of the same genus as human smallpox, but is generally less lethal. It is a viral zoonotic disease, in which its transmission to humans can occur through contact with a person infected with the mpox virus, materials contaminated with the virus, or infected wild animals.
Signs and symptoms generally include rash or skin lesions, swollen lymph nodes (tongues), fever, headache, body aches, chills, and weakness.
People with compatible symptoms should seek a health unit for evaluation. It is recommended to avoid close contact with other people.
