Denying the Bible to political prisoners violates “freedom of worship”, they denounce

I/A Court HR condemns the absolute lack of protection suffered by political prisoners in Nicaragua

The regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo denies political prisoners access to a Bible or any reading material, but this measure applies to opponents who are detained in the cells of the Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ), known as “El Chipote”.

Relatives of the hostages of conscience point out that the right to freedom of worship must be respected. The dictatorship has reached the point of removing all labels from personal hygiene products, those that have information on the chemical components so that they cannot read anything.

«In Nicaragua more than 200 people are imprisoned for political reasons, in 18 months they have not been allowed to receive reading material, not even a Bible. Their right to freedom of worship must be respected,” the family of Juan Sebastián Chamorro, a political prisoner and former presidential candidate, claimed on his Twitter account.

The relatives of political prisoners have demanded that they be allowed access to a Bible, but the regime has denied this request, which, according to human rights organizations, constitutes an act of torture against prisoners of conscience.

“We insist that they have access to a Bible or any sacred book for our relatives according to the religion they profess and to any reading book,” Berta Valle, wife of political prisoner Félix Maradiaga, a former presidential candidate, recently demanded.

Article 29 of the Political Constitution of Nicaragua establishes that “everyone has the right to freedom of conscience, thought and to profess or not a religion. No one can be subject to coercive measures that may undermine these rights or be forced to declare their creed, ideology or belief.
