Dengue cases skyrocket in Cuba: 4,776 in the last week

MIAMI, United States. – The cuban regime reported that during the third week of July, 4,776 cases of dengue were reported throughout the country, a figure higher than that registered on the Island during the first quarter of the current year.

The statistics were released this Thursday during a meeting of the Cuban dictatorship’s staff in which authorities from the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) also participated.

The sector minister, José Ángel Portal Miranda, indicated that in the third week of July, 23,758 unspecific febrile cases were identified and 10,590 SUMA IgM samples were processed for dengue diagnosis, with a positivity of 45.1 percent, for a total of 4,776 reactive cases.

MINSAP statistics indicate that 66.1 percent of the focus is concentrated in the provinces of Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, Camagüey, Matanzas and Pinar del Río.

The meeting was headed by Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz. Experts and scientists for health issues and the temporary working group for the prevention and control of the new coronavirus were also present.

According to the portal Cuban Presidency, the authorities pointed out that although “this is not an epidemic as severe as others previously reported, the numbers demand a greater perception of risk.” They also called on the population and institutions to “increase the detection and destruction of mosquito hotspots.” Aedes aegyptidisease transmitting agent.

The health sector authorities insisted that the country has an infrastructure for dengue control and recalled that the main settings for medical care are the family doctor’s office, the polyclinic and its emergency services, as well as the hospital emergency room.

Dr. Reinol Fermín García Moreiro, deputy minister of MINSAP, reported that the country has 3,436 hospitalization beds for dengue patients, divided into 156 beds in intensive care units, 554 in intensive care units, and 2,726 in conventional care rooms. In that sense, he assured that it is planned to increase the number of beds if necessary.
