Democratic Socialism stays with the Chamber: Vlado Mirosevic becomes its new president

After weeks of negotiations, lower candidates and changes of opinion, the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies elected this Monday the new board of directors that will replace the outgoing Raúl Soto (PPD). The chosen one was Vlado Mirosevic (PL), of Democratic Socialism, who prevailed in the second round against DC Miguel Ángel Calisto.

Callisto? Indeed, since the opposition made a last minute move and decided not to support the -a priori- official candidate of the sector: the PDG Víctor Pino. But doubts within the PDG itself and Pino’s little experience made them opt for DC.

A move that did not help them much, because in the same way Mirosevic won in the second round by 77 votes versus Calisto’s 73 (there were two null/blanks). In this way, Mirosevic will become Soto’s successor and the table will be completely commanded by the ruling party. In the first round, Mirosevic obtained 74 votes, compared to 70 for Calisto. Karol Cariola (PC) was third with 3.

This is because, unlike what happened in the presidential election, the first and second vice presidents were elected in the first round, since both winners obtained the necessary 78 votes. As first vice president was Carlos Bianchi (Ind) -79 votes vs. 70 for Sofía Cid- and as second vice president Catalina Pérez (RD), who obtained 79 votes against 67 obtained by René Alinco.

After criticism for not wearing a tie – “I will wear it tomorrow”, he said – the brand new president of the board of directors, Vlado Mirosevic, mainly thanked the votes he received -and which are public today thanks to a new voting system implemented – and Karol Cariola (PC), who was the main option of the ruling party but due to resentments and doubts generated in the DC, the PDG and independents, especially after his support for Approval in the past plebiscite, caused his candidacy to be lowered .

The new official letter, however, had been resisted from the opposition right, where they stressed that Mirosevic was also one of the faces of the Approval campaign. However, his name did generate more consensus, allowing the Government of President Gabriel Boric to maintain power in both chambers of Congress. In fact, maintaining this was one of the main tasks of the Segpres minister, Ana Lya Uriarte, who has held a series of meetings with the ruling parties in recent weeks to respect the parliamentary agreement signed in March.

Although the ruling party celebrated the victory with shouts of “No + AFP” and hugs among themselves, Mirosevic’s victory is viewed with tweezers, because he did not reach the limit of 78 votes, and became one of the presidents elected with less votes.

Who is Vlado?

With a more “moderate” profile, unlike Karol Cariola, deputy Vlado Mirosevic (35) has an extensive career linked to politics, even before taking office as a parliamentarian. During 2006 and 2007 he was director of the digital newspaper El Morrocotudo de Arica, and has dedicated himself to the promotion of citizen journalism, collaborating with the expansion process of the Network of Citizen Newspapers of Chile (Mi Voz). In 2005 he was named one of the 50 Young Leaders of Chile by the newspaper El Mercurio and the Adolfo Ibáñez University.

Years later, he founded with another group of young people, the Liberal Party, of which he was its president. For the same party, on the Broad Front list, in 2017 he was elected as deputy for the 1st. District, Region of Arica and Parinacota, for the period 2018-2022. He obtained the first majority in the district with 24,273 votes, equivalent to 34.09% of the total votes validly cast.

In 2021, he presented his re-election, for the same district, but on the New Social Pact list, for the period 2022-2026. He was re-elected again with the first district majority, with 16,819 votes, corresponding to 20.91% of the total valid votes.

He studied political science at the Universidad Central, and later did an international master’s degree in digital journalism at the Universidad Mayor. And he has published research for think tanks and international organizations, such as the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC).

Mirosevic has also been the protagonist of various controversies, some even curious. The most recent, in the middle of the Approval campaign for the exit plebiscite. At a press point, Mirosevic appeared in the jersey of the Chilean soccer team, which earned him a confrontation with the Chilean Professional Football Association (ANFP), who criticized the political use of the jersey.
