Democratic senators ask Biden to lift sanctions against Venezuela

Democratic senators ask Biden to lift sanctions against Venezuela

Through a letter sent to the President of the United States, Joe Biden, 18 progressive Democratic US senators sent a letter to President Joe Biden, in which they ask his government to lift all sanctions against Venezuela that “exacerbate the humanitarian situation.”

The letter was posted by AP journalist Joshua Goodman on his Twitter account.

The senators mention the actions carried out by President Biden to obtain the release of two North American citizens, who were detained in Venezuela for being accused of being involved in the Citgo case.

Likewise, they highlight the manifest commitment by the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, with the process of dialogue with the different oppositions in the country.

“This new rapprochement of Venezuela is giving tangible results and we should see it that way, so we urge you to continue with this persistence in the dialogue with the Venezuelan government so that it endorses this process,” the letter highlights.

Lifting of sanctions

The senators asked President Biden to consider lifting most of the sanctions “which have done little, but have generalized the suffering of the Venezuelan people,” they highlight.

Likewise, the senators stressed that the policies imposed by Trump against Venezuela not only failed but also “exacerbated” the suffering of the Venezuelan people.

The senators listed some of the failed claims of the measures imposed by Trump against Venezuela, such as a failed military uprising and threats of armed intervention, as well as the cessation of all relations with Maduro and his allies, which only managed to deepen the political crisis of the country.

The senators acknowledge that the imposition of far-reaching sanctions by the US government “have only served to deepen the political crisis in Venezuela and have strengthened the government of Nicolás Maduro, as well as undermining the credibility of the US while leaving every day to Venezuelans with terrible human costs.”

They also highlight that numerous studies have shown that the suffering of the Venezuelan people stems from the imposition of US sanctions as one of the main causes.
