Democratic senator who met with Díaz-Canel talks with activists in Havana

Senador Ron Wyden

MIAMI, United States. — Ron Wyden, Democratic senator for the state of Oregon, met this Friday with human rights activists in Cuba to address the situation of political prisoners on the island.

The American politician received the economist Martha Beatriz Roque Cabello and the independent lawyer Julio Ferrer Tamayo at the residence of the United States Chargé d’Affaires in Cuba, Benjamin Ziff.

Roque Cabello, who chairs the Cuban Center for Human Rights, told Radio and Television Martí that the meeting discussed the conditions in which political prisoners are found and the suffering to which their relatives have been subjected.

According to the source, the activists updated the senator on the political prisoners who are in prisons in other provinces, far from their homes, which makes it difficult for their relatives to visit and the delivery of food, clothing and supplies.

“We have prisoners who are in one regime and others are in another, there are prisoners who are denied benefits; all these things we explain to you in detail, ”he told Radio Television Martí the former prisoner of conscience of the Group of 75.

Ferrer Tamayo and Roque Cabello also made an aside with the situation of minors imprisoned after the anti-government protests of July 11, 2021 (July 11), as well as that of other prisoners who are already of advanced age, who “do not have to live with the prison regime in which they live”.

“We let him know that the biggest concern is that the dictatorship that made his laws violates his laws,” added Roque Cabello, who indicated that the senator listened carefully to the information about political prisoners and was “very receptive.”

“He says that he is a defender of human rights regardless of his way of thinking from the political point of view and I think he is not going to leave this problem like that, but is going to transfer it to the different committees in which he can participate. ”, explained the activist to Radio Television Martí.

Prior to his meeting with Martha Beatriz Roque Cabello and Julio Ferrer Tamayo, Ron Wyden had met with the ruler Miguel Diaz-Canel.

It is, Roque Cabello assured, a politician who seeks “a rapprochement with the dictatorship” and who has criticized the US embargo. However, the economist assured that Wyden also “is a defender of human rights and he believes in that.”

“I think that he was very receptive and that he will continue within his work this situation of human rights that we unquestionably raised with him that in our opinion it is very important that in order to take a step towards conversation, the prisoners have to be taken into account. politicians,” said the well-known opponent.
