Holy Week is near and with it, in addition to religious activities, many of which the Nicaraguan regime has prohibited, tours to the beaches are activated, where a basket with traditional summer fruits cannot be missing.
Watermelons, melons, papayas, mangoes, tangerines, jocotes and pineapples are among others the fruits that are already found in the baskets of the modules and sales stalls of the merchants in the cities of Somoto and Estelí, this as part of the products that are traditionally consumed with the arrival of summer or Easter each year.
Until now, the prices of the vast majority of these coveted fruits have been falling in cost as supply increases and demand from consumers is encouraged, as confirmed by merchants who are located around the municipal market of the cities of Somoto. and Estelí, where sales begin to pick up after the declines recorded throughout the month of January and February.

“Now what is moving the most are the watermelons that we are selling at 30, 50, 80, 100 and 150 córdobas per unit, depending on the size, and the pineapple that we offer at 30 córdobas. The jocotes that we offer the bag at 10 córdobas are also moving a lot,” he explained. Francisco Noel Díaz, a merchant from the vicinity of the municipal market in the city of Somoto, head of the department of Madriz.
He added that all these products are carried by wholesalers who are bought from the departments of Chinandega, León, Masaya and Estelí, “there is another part of peasant families from various areas of Madriz and also products that come from Honduras.”
Melon, one of the most expensive
For his part, the Somoteño merchant Franklin Ramón Ramírez assures that the only product that up to now remains a little more expensive is melon, which previously was quoted at 25 córdobas. “Now we are offering it between 40 and 50 córdobas depending on the size. Other products that still have prices from other years are tangerines, papayas, and mangoes,” said Ramírez, who has his fruit stall in the Somoto market.
Oranges and guavas are so far the fruits that are just beginning to reach these locations. “This week we hope that these fruits, which are in great demand during this summer season, will begin to arrive in Estelí. These products are brought from areas such as Chinandega, León, Masaya and Rivas, which is where they mostly come from,” said Héctor Machado López, a merchant from the outskirts of the Alfredo Lazo market in the city of Estelí, where informal merchants from other towns have also arrived. .
While inside the municipal markets of both cities, dried fish is already on offer. “We are selling dried fish and boruchas (tiny fish bags) for the Easter soups now, and we are offering them at 100 and 150 córdobas per unit, depending on the size,” explained the merchant Sonia del Carmen Martínez Casco.
The Somoteño and Esteliano merchants hope this year to improve sales of these fruits that are in greater demand in this summer season, since some remember that in the last three previous years, sales were bad.
To hydrate the body
The pediatrician Ricardo Altamirano and the natural orthopathic general practitioner, Lidia Vanesa Talavera, agreed in pointing out the need to consume fruit as a way to keep the body hydrated with the arrival of the summer season and Holy Week.
“Let’s remember that this season is very hot and exposed to the sun, so we must consume a lot of fruit such as watermelon, melon, papaya, pineapple and others that contain plenty of water, in addition to their health benefits,” explained Dr. Talavera. .
Both Somoteño doctors recommended that people, mainly the elderly, consume a lot of fruit that generates nutrients and hydrates the body, preventing hypertension or heart attack problems.
“Juicy fruits help hydrate the body in this time of excessive solar heat, which mainly affects those who suffer from blood pressure or hypertension problems. Also, children must not be forgotten to protect their skin,” said Dr. Altamirano.
Dr. Talavera, a doctor focused on the natural orthopathic area, a health professional who has knowledge of allopathic medicine, but who knows the knowledge and therapies of natural medicine to help heal, prevent and improve health, reiterated that at this time you have to eat healthy eating fruits and vegetables.
«The most recommended thing is that people take extreme measures for this time of Easter, which is when the sun becomes relentless with the excess heat it produces during the day and night, and they must consume some fruits, of course You should consult your doctor first, because some contain a lot of sugar and if you have diabetes it can harm you,” he stressed.
