Delta variant increases in October and November in the DR

The worrying variant of covid-19, called delta, worsened during the months of October and November in the Dominican Republic.

After the fourth wave of the SARS CoV-2 virus that affected the country during those months, the predominant mutation was the delta.

This was reported yesterday by the Director of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health, Ronald Skewes, explaining that between the seventh and the 20th of last October, 135 samples were taken, of which 126 were positive for the variant, detected for the first time in the India, a country in South Asia.

The specialist confirmed that after receiving the results of the tests sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States and Brazil, two tests also came out positive for the gamma variant and another four for the mu.

He said that the delta was found, specifically in the provinces of La Altagracia, Santiago, Montecristi, María Trinidad Sánchez, as well as in Santo Domingo and the National District.
Skewes urged to complete the vaccination schedule and maintain preventive measures to avoid new outbreaks due to Christmas festivities.

Ómicron has not yet made a party in the country

While on the new variation of covid-19, omicron, detected in South Africa, Skewes explained that it has not yet manifested itself in the Dominican Republic.

“As soon as we have any news, you are going to let him know,” Skewes said after presenting the epidemiological report 622 of covid-19 in the country.

The epidemiologist stated that the vaccination process must continue to prevent the emergence of variants of this infectious virus.

He argued that in the case of South Africa, this area has a low percentage of vaccination, where only 20% of its population has the antigen.

Vice President says for now there will be no restrictions for Christmas

The Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña, said yesterday that for the moment there will be no restrictions due to the upcoming Christmas festivities.

“So far no measure, the main measure, gentlemen, is to continue vaccinating ourselves,” said Peña.

The also coordinator of the Health Cabinet expressed that the purpose is for the population to continue applying the second and third doses of the vaccine.

In addition, he reiterated that they will remain vigilant in any situation to give the appropriate response and protect everyone’s life.
Regarding the motivation to those who have not yet been vaccinated, he said that they will continue with the house-to-house sessions, as well as emphasizing inoculation.

“The only thing that is shielding us apart from the hand of God is vaccination,” said Peña after the start of the first National Day of Blood Typing at the headquarters of the Ministry of Public Health.

More than 5 million are vaccinated

So far, 5,601,216 million of the Dominican population is completely inoculated. While those who have received a single dose reaches the figure of 6,875,984 people, another 5,601,216 have the second dose and 1,339,737 have received the booster dose. The authorities recommend following health protocols.

More than 200 new cases and six deaths from viruses

The Ministry of Public Health reported yesterday that in the last 24 hours, 223 new cases and six deaths caused by covid-19 were reported. During the presentation of the epidemiological bulletin 622, it was announced that the cases of the infectious virus registered in the country increased to 407,474, as well as the active cases to 2,614. The health institution indicated that 400,650 people have recovered and 2,056,575 cases have been discarded.
