Deliveries ask for assistance in the face of a heat wave

Deliveries request the intervention of the Ministry of Labor before working days under extreme heat. Federico Ferreira, president of the National Motorcycle Workers Union (Sinactram), appeared on Wednesday morning at the headquarters of the labor portfolio, to present a note asking labor inspectors to monitor the working hours of the sector.

They request that the employing companies provide water, adequate food and spaces for rest, cleaning and refrigeration. They also request the formation of a working table between the union, the Minister of Labor, the Directorate of Occupational Health and Safety of the Vice Ministry of Labor, the Paraguayan Society of Occupational Medicine and the Department of Occupational Health of the Ministry of Health to draft the regulation. of the work of deliveries in extreme weather situations.

Ferreira points out that the situation of motorcycle workers, given the high temperatures of recent weeks, is desperate. To this is added the smoke generated by the burning of grasslands that invades the environment. “We work up to 14 hours a day and are exposed to extreme heat,” he said.

ORDER
Specifically, the sector asks the labor portfolio for the intervention of labor inspectors so that companies guarantee the provision of water, food, rest spaces, cleaning and refrigeration for motorcycle workers who transport goods from the company to the client. Ferreira details that working between 12 to 14 hours a day under 50 degrees of thermal sensation (heat accentuated by the asphalt), generates health problems for motorcyclists.

“We want to ask for a fair claim. At least there is no shortage of water, a place to rest, a place to eat. Basic things for work are not providing. We live in total precariousness, ”she pointed out.

Jorge Alvarenga, president of the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT) was supporting the request for the deliveries at the headquarters of the Ministry of Labor. Only in Central there are 3000 delivery men.

Each of them must deliver an average of 40 to 60 orders per day. At the country level there are about 16 thousand motorcycle workers (delivery, collectors and more), of which 13 have already died from Covid-19. Each of these workers has a 12-hour workday, which even reaches 2:00 p.m. on some days.
