In a private session, the ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) begin today the deliberation to integrate the Evaluation Committee of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (PJF), one of the three that will be in charge of being the first filter on the candidates for judges, magistrates and ministers for the June 2025 elections.
High court sources consulted by The Day They indicated that the discussion could last all week, but the committee will be ready before Thursday, October 31, the deadline established by law.
Article 96 of the reform of the Judiciary, which came into force on September 16, states that each power of the Union will comprise an Evaluation Committee made up of five recognized jurists, who will receive the files of the applicants and identify the candidates. best evaluated to be nominated to the Court, to the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation, to the new Judicial Disciplinary Court and to circuit magistrates and district judges.
Among the biggest challenges that the ministers will face today is agreeing on which jurists they should choose to join the committee, due to the marked differences between the ministers regarding the reform.
Last weekend, ministers Loretta Ortiz Ahlf and Yasmín Esquivel Mossa went ahead and proposed to the minister president Norma Lucía Piña Hernández that the jurists Leoba Castañeda Rivas, Ruth Villanueva Castilleja, Silvia Gabriela Ortiz Rascón, Raúl Plascencia Villanueva and Manuel Becerra Ramírez form part of the PJF evaluation committee.
The sources consulted announced that once the committee is formed, the Court plans for it to be governed by high standards and to act with the support of civil associations, groups of lawyers and international organizations.
Subsequently, the committee must launch, no later than November 4, the call to those who aspire to participate in the process and the registration period will be between November 5 and 24.
The integration of the lists of applicants who attended the call and meet the eligibility requirements must be completed no later than December 14 to be published the following day.
No later than January 31, 2025, the committee must rate the suitability and compile a list of the best evaluated people. Its purification, in accordance with the law, has until February 4, and then it will be sent to Congress.
