Delia Espinoza: JNJ removed her from the position of supreme prosecutor

It took twenty-four hours for the National Board of Justice (JNJ) to make a decision on the future of the nation’s former prosecutor Delia Espinoza. Unanimously, and with the singular votes of two of its members: Gino Ríos and Jaime de la Puente, the institution resolved to remove her from the position of supreme prosecutor for having ignored the resolution that ordered, in June of last year, the reinstatement of Patricia Benavides Vargas in the position of supreme prosecutor and prosecutor of the Nation.

The decision was adopted in support of the presentation by JNJ vice president Víctor Hugo Chanduví, who maintained that Espinoza violated the Fiscal Career Law and committed “very serious offenses” by not complying with the JNJ’s provision for Benavides to be restored. He indicated that said measure was an “administrative act of a declarative nature” so its legal effects “were produced immediately from its issuance, with no room for dilatory interpretations or waiting behavior.”

The president of the JNJ, María Teresa Cabrera, participated in the session, who prepared the report that proposed the dismissal of Espinoza. Both, it is worth mentioning, were involved in an angry exchange of words the day before after the latter pointed out that the accusation was based on “tendentious and forced speculations.”

Also a day earlier, the National Board of Justice dismissed former national prosecutor Pablo Sánchez, who will present an appeal for reconsideration before the JNJ considering that the measure is based on facts that have already been sanctioned or filed in the Prosecutor’s Office.
