Delgado’s emotion when talking about his children’s claim for their absences

The candidacy for 2024, what he would like to see said about the current term when it ends and his relationship with his wife and children who have complained about him for not being at important moments, to the point that he was moved to tears when he told it, were the most significant moments of the interview with the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado.

In the interview for the cycle Postscript Hosted by journalist Óscar González Oro, Delgado also referred to his origins in politics and in the National Party, despite the fact that his father was from Colorado and his mother was civic.

Between the personal and the political, this is a summary of the interview. Look at the video

Tomorrow the coalition does focus groups and surveys and says the one that measures the most is Álvaro Delgado, what do you do?
And I’ll tell you about it in the next interview (laughs) Do you know what happens? I cannot express now, with two years left in government and with so many things to do, things that I can feel inside. I can feel them like anyone but ultimately I publicly said from mid-2023 I start talking about electoral issues. I am aware of the responsibility, I am aware of everything. But do you know what happens? Any decision of mine, if I outsource it, also conditions the government due to the position I have. So I am a government man and now my main function is for the government to be the best government in recent times and then we will see and surely you will invite me to the next interview and there I will be very frank and I will say everything I feel and everything I think and everything I’m going to do.

Would you like to be president of Uruguay?
And I think that everyone who is in politics at some point thought of it.

Any priest wants to be a pope
And I don’t know, the situation today is also very different from a year ago, two years ago, five years ago when I was a senator, the world changed. Obviously the pandemic generated significant notoriety. Notoriety is not always positive. I mean. We will see. We will see. Yes, one would obviously like to work on things that you learned to do and, as I told you, governing implies learning while inside. Not being outside. But in reality obviously it is the people who decide. Circumstances, people and one’s own will.

What would you like to see said about this presidential term when it ends?
First a government that people are better off and that they perceive it as such. I believe that we came to change what was bad, to improve what was good and to do things that were never done according to these times. I think it will end up being a good government and I hope the people feel it, that’s why I tell you that this process did not end with Luis as president, but rather it begins with the president and gives you the confidence to continue. Obviously that people are better, that they feel that they are better, that they perceive and that they really are. That there are more development opportunities for everyone, but especially for the youngest who still have a slightly lower unemployment rate. That we have been able to carry out the reforms that must be carried out, that the country needs: social security, education, and also, as Luis said, I really liked (what he said) on March 1 when he took office, “if when I leave On March 1, 2025, the Uruguayan is freer, it is because I had a good government”.

All that activity, all this journey that is your life, has come at a cost. I read an interview of yours where you said that your children gave you a bill for the absence.
I don’t know if the word is invoice…

claim
Claims. You know they gave it to me… look, I’m excited… I never thought they’d keep them for so long. I have three children. Agustina, who works in the Agricultural Sciences area, Felipe who just started Economics and Finance, but is also very sporty, and Pilar, the youngest who started Law and also does a lot of sports. Pilar, who I thought was the one who was going to feel the least not so long ago, told me, on that birthday I gave her, “you came with your secretary who was on I don’t know what, you ate a hamburger and left.” And she totally reminded me, she remembered what she had done, how long she had been and it’s incredible.

You can meet millions like dad but you fail in one and it’s the one they remember.

And it’s natural.

What’s admirable is that you’re still married. The function can cost you a divorce, right?
It depends on the type of partner you have and the type of family you have. In this case, there is a lot of merit from Leticia, my wife, who really are those things that you come across in life with someone that I am not going to say what she is in terms of banking me because it would be very macho because it would be “I am the center” and I am not. The center of the family is her, not me. Yes, she was father and mother many times, they went with many things, she justified many others that I was not there and covered and it never took its toll. Now some more (laughs). But do you know what she is? A person with a lot of common sense, very tolerant, a mother, a very mother. Leticia is very madrassa in that sense. We are already on our way to 26 years of marriage and 5 of boyfriends. She is an eternity, she knows me more than anyone. We bank because she is not “banking me” because it would also be self-referential. We support each other and we have a family that we form and raise that I am truly proud of my children.
