In the context of the recent presidential debate, the candidate of the National Party (PN), Alvaro Delgadotook advantage of his last minutes of speech to reflect on his career and the circumstances facing the country. Recalling his time as Secretary of the Presidency during the health crisis caused by the pandemic, Delgado addressed the audience with a rhetorical question that sought to provoke reflection on leadership in times of crisis: “If tomorrow Uruguay were faced with a new crisis, who would give them more confidence and tranquility in command of the country?”.
Delgado proposed himself, in a somewhat messianic tone, as a candidate with the necessary preparation and experience to assume leadership responsibility in difficult times. He presented himself as a “captain of the helm” that he is ready to guide Uruguay, stating that his capacity is not only limited to facing “stormy waters”, but that he is also willing to govern in periods of stability.
In his opinion, it is essential to show the electorate that you are aware of the challenges facing Uruguay and that you understand the significance of the upcoming election. Without mentioning it, Delgado knows that all the polls are unfavorable to him, and give a virtual victory to Yamandú Orsi.
Delgado threw chicanes, but they were ignored by Orsi
In his speech, the candidate emphasized his commitment to the country’s progress, assuring Uruguayans that he has grasped the message that resonates in the electoral campaign and that he is prepared to talk about a better future. He stated that, if he became president, would seek to implement a “path of harmony” that allows it to govern for all citizens. Delgado committed to working so that, within a five-year horizon, Uruguay is recognized as the most developed country in Latin America.
The presidential debate, according to Delgado, represented a fundamental opportunity for citizens to compare the different proposals of the candidates. He described it as a “job interview”, in which each candidate has the opportunity to show their preparation, their program and their ideas, thus allowing the population to make informed decisions. In this context, he stressed the importance of the event, being the second of its kind since 2019.
In his presentation, Delgado outlined a clear division between two governance models. On the one hand, that of the government coalition, which he claims is a symbol of stability, economic growth, security and freedoms for society. On the other hand, the Broad Front model, which he characterized as a supposed return to the past, driven by an ideology that, according to him, would generate uncertainty, a greater tax burden, and a reduction in individual freedoms.
He threw several chicanery at Orsi, who preferred not to descend into controversy and completely ignored them, while also avoiding mentioning the various corruption scandals of the Luis Lacalle Pou government, of which Delgado was the main character.
