Frente Amplio candidate Yamandú Orsi recently commented on various political and social issues. Among his statements, he focused on the proposal of the National Party candidate, Álvaro Delgado, regarding the reduction of the cost of living. Orsi was skeptical about this initiative, suggesting that it would have been more effective if it had been presented years ago.
During a meeting with residents of the Cerro and La Teja neighborhoods, Orsi addressed the issue of nighttime raids. He quoted former prosecutor Juan Gómez, who stressed the need to handle this measure with caution, emphasizing its potential usefulness but also the demand for respect and prudence toward citizens. Gómez suggested an exhaustive analysis by the prosecutors who propose these measures, given the risk to important legal assets.
The Frente Amplio candidate agreed that Gómez is a voice that deserves attention. Orsi said that although night raids could be a tool against drug trafficking, he does not consider that modifying the Constitution is the definitive solution. He raised the possibility of exploring alternatives such as an interpretative law, instead of amending the Constitution.
Internal Dialogue on Social Security
Orsi also referred to the internal differences within the Frente Amplio regarding the Social Security plebiscite. Despite the differences, he stressed the freedom of expression within the coalition. A group of economists within the party has expressed their opposition to the plebiscite, using the freedom granted by the Frente Amplio to express their divergent points of view.
Regarding the criticism of the Communist Party and Casa Grande towards this position, Orsi expressed his desire to dialogue with its members to better understand the situation. Constanza Moreira, leader of Casa Grande, recently stressed the importance of maintaining cohesion between the Frente Amplio and the union movement in the electoral context.
Intellectual Honesty in the Electoral Campaign
In his reflections on the election campaign, Orsi stressed the importance of intellectual honesty in political discourse. He admitted that candidates are often advised to make shocking statements to attract media attention, but stressed that his priority is transparency and depth in the discussion of proposals.
Regarding economic policy and competitiveness, Orsi analyzed the appreciation of the peso and its negative impact on export sectors, which, in his opinion, contributes to Uruguay being an expensive country. Regarding Delgado’s proposal to reduce the cost of living, he emphasized that it would have been more effective if it had been implemented in earlier times, avoiding the current difficulties.
