Deficit in railways affect supply of salt in Cuba

OnCubaNews

The supply of salt to the population in Cuba has been affected by the low technical state of the railroad boxes that transport this product, indicated the Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O Levy.

The head of the branch pointed out in the television program Mesa Redonda that there are 9,000 tons in the salt mine warehouses, although the deficit in transport has affected the lack of this product among consumers, pointed Granma newspaper.

“There is a team of people thinking about how to modify the conditions of the salt pans, with the objective that the trains enter and can load on plates, not on boxes, and thus fill the containers,” said De la O Levy.

He added that to resolve this situation there are already 14 railway plates and it is expected to reach up to 100 in full operation to transport the salt from the containers.

He stated that, recently, an operation with maritime transport was carried out jointly with the Revolutionary Armed Forces to move 300 tons of salt to different municipalities in Havana.

Granma explained that there are nine basic business units (UEB) that make up the Salt Company, an entity whose objective is the production, extraction, transportation and commercialization of salt in all its assortments and derivatives.

The UEB of Guantánamo province, in eastern Cuba, guarantees about 42 percent of national consumption, Granma added.
