As we approach the holiday season and the end of the year, The authorities in Cúcuta are already taking steps to prohibit the use, marketing and sale of gunpowder in various sectors of the capital of the department and its metropolitan area.

The Government Secretariat announced that in the coming days the decree will be issued that prohibits, regulates and restricts the sale, distribution, marketing and use of artificial games within the framework of the Christmas and New Year’s Eve season in the capital of the department.
This taking into account that, according to the health authorities of Cúcuta, the previous year 28 cases of people burned with gunpowder were recorded, eight more than in 2023.
Registering effects due to burns, lacerations, amputations, eye fractures and contusions, due to improper handling of these products.
The secretary of the government of Cúcuta, Miguel Castellanos, stated that a technical table was installed, with the objective of strengthening the strategies and thus controlling the sale of gunpowder, as has been presented in previous years.
“We installed the first work table with the Secretariat of Citizen Security, the Secretariat of Government, the Police and the Army, to get up early to the Christmas in this important action. “We seek to prevent the illegal sale of gunpowder and this causing harm to the community,” stated the municipal official.
Likewise, the municipal administration made a recommendation to parents that this Christmas season there be greater controls and surveillance. This after the Departmental Health Institute confirmed that the 40 percent of the people burned the previous year were minors.
“We have to be very careful with what our children and adolescents are doing; this is an express responsibility of parents, especially in this season. “We must assume control of the family so that tragedies do not occur,” said Castellanos.
On the other hand, the previous year the health authorities confirmed that of the 80 people affected by gunpowder, 28 cases were registered in the city of Cúcuta; an increase of 40% compared to 2024. In the municipality of Tibú, 13 cases of burned people, with an increase of 160%.

In the municipality of Ocaña, 12 people were injured by fireworks, reaching a 100% increase in cases. There were also five cases in the municipalities of Playa de Belén, El Tarra, Villa del Rosario and Ábrego, and one case in the municipalities of Cucutilla, El Zulia, Hacarí, La Esperanza, Los Patios, Pamplonita and Teorama.
According to the information provided by the Departmental Institute of Health, of the 80 people burned with gunpowder, 32 are minors, which represents 40% of those affected by pyrotechnics.
