'Decision to maintain EPS opens space for responsible reform'

The Colombian Association of Comprehensive Medicine Companies, ACEMI, they see as positive the decision of the National Government not to eliminate the Health Promotion Entities (EPS) in reform that will be presented this February 13 before the Congress of the Republic.

(Notice from the Government to EPS: they would not disappear and should be conditioned).

“We believe that this decision not only recognizes the experience of more than 30 years that the EPS have and the capacities developed, but also allows the evolution of the System towards a model that favors primary health care and actions in promotion and prevention of health by preserving the figure of the EPS with multiple functions, including the articulation of health services for citizens”, said Paula Acosta, president of ACEMI.

For the Association, this is the first step and opens a channel to develop a reform that allows these institutions to continue being a key part of the System.

(The pillars of what would be the health reform of the Petro government).

Regarding the space that the National Government held with the EPS, Paula Acosta, president of ACEMI, pointed out that “We understand that this meeting is the beginning of a process to evolve in the Health System and make the will that we have expressed so many times to contribute to change come true.”

For his part, Andrés Barragán, director of the Compensar Health Unit and member of the ACEMI board of directors, stated that, “The EPS can continue in the System that the Government wants in the future. We hope that this space for dialogue will be maintained since the process before the Congress of the Republic is about to begin”.

(Only 1 in 3 Colombians would migrate to a public health system).

At the moment, ACEMI is waiting for the final guidelines of President Gustavo Petro, which will be the route to materialize the reform in a harmonious way; and calls for guarantees, transparency and spaces for dialogue in the discussion that will take place in the Congress of the Republic.
