December, record number of arrests of Nicaraguans and Cubans on the southern US border

A total of 35,490 Nicaraguans were detained in December 2022 at the southern border of the United States, according to data from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office, released over the weekend.

The number, which is the highest in the last 30 years, occurred just before Title 42 was expanded–applied in principle to Venezuelans–and now to Nicaraguans, Cubans, and Haitians.

With the data from December, a total of 217,091 Nicaraguan migrants who were found by the Border Patrol in 2022 are counted.

Meanwhile, Cuba had another peak with more than 44,064 meetings in December 2022, the highest number in recent years.

The total number of Cubans who crossed the border irregularly in 2022 was 313,488.

The data for Cubans and Nicaraguans is close to that of the countries of the Northern Triangle, made up of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

The latter country registered at least 85,997 migrants held at the US border in 2022, while Guatemala 237,623 and Honduras 213,650.
