Deaths from traffic accidents fell 29% on the Christmas holiday

The Directorate of Transit and Transportation of the National Police presented on Monday the consolidated balance of road accidents in the country, whose figures show a 69% decrease in this indicator.

(Mintransporte insists on collecting Soat ‘the hard way’ and prepares measures).

While the 2021 Christmas holiday registered 319 claims, this year there were only 100 cases, that is, 219 fewer.

Fatal claims (deceased people) were also reduced by 29%, from 70 in 2021 to 50 in 2022, that is, 20 fewer people died.

The same way, the number of injured also registered a decrease of 66% compared to the previous year, when 369 and 126 were registered this year, which presents a difference of 243 fewer injured.

(They launch a campaign to reduce road accidents due to tire failures).

The Minister of Transportation, Guillermo Francisco Reyes González, stated that “For the Ministry of Transport, its affiliated entities and the Ditra, it is encouraging to inform them that during the Christmas festivities, claims were reduced by 69%. This taking into account that 2,216,339 vehicles were mobilized on the roads of our country (passing through tolls). However, 20 of the 142 vehicles involved in road accidents did not have the current SOAT, despite the measures taken by the Government to facilitate their purchase. For this reason, from the Ministry together with the DITRA we continue to increase the rigor with the transit operations to promote the carrying of all the necessary documents to drive. Road safety and the protection of the life of Colombians have no excuse”.

Traffic accidents.

In this sense, during the Christmas season, 50 deaths were registered in road accidents, of which 37 were men and 13 women.

Regarding the injured citizens, 88 were men and 38 women. Another significant reduction was registered in the number of registered subpoenas, from 2,676 in 2021 to 1,953 in 2022, reflecting a 27% decrease.

(‘Road accidents lower the productivity of cities’).

On the other hand, the most penalized offenses from Friday, December 24 to Sunday, December 26, were: not carrying a driver’s license, with a record of 351 cases; driving motorcycles without observing the rules, with a record of 214 cases; mechanical technical review, with a record of 185 cases; lack of compulsory insurance, with 136; among others.

Finally, national mobility was reduced by 6%. Going from 2,355,846 in 2021 to 2,216,339 in 2022, that is, 139,507 fewer vehicles this year.
