“In the same period in 2023, 58 deaths were reported, meaning that so far this year, there have been 1.86 times as many deaths as in 2023 in the same period,” Barrena said.
The former secretary of the Piura Medical Association also pointed out that 3 deaths from pneumonia in children under 5 years of age have been reported.
“In the department of Piura, 77 deaths have been reported among those over 60 years of age. That is, so far this year, 1.6 times the number of deaths reported in 2023 have been reported in the same period,” said Barrena.
He stressed that pneumonia in children under 5 years of age has been above the expected cases (in epidemic) since epidemiological week No. 26-62024 (last week of June), having a little in week 29-2024 (3rd week of July) and then remaining as an epidemic.
He added that Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) in children under 5 years of age, as of epidemiological week No. 33-2024 (as of August 17) in the department of Piura, are within the expected figures, without exceeding the endemic channel.
Finally, Barrena recommended that health authorities issue a pneumonia alert so that health facilities are prepared for the increase in cases and deaths.
