Death toll from Italian glacier collapse rises to 10

The death toll from the calving of a glacier in Italy rises to seven

They discovered accumulated water under the ice, which is why it is feared that it will continue to collapse.

A new body was found this Thursday by Italian rescuers after the collapse of part of the Marmolada glacier in the Alps last Sunday, and the death toll in the tragedy rises to ten, local authorities reported.

“The confirmed victims are ten,” a spokesman for the autonomous province of Trentino, in the north of the country, told the AFP agency.

A team of 14 rescuers, accompanied by specialized dogs, searches for remains and objects rolled over by the avalanche of ice and rocks.

The Trento prosecutor’s office opened an investigation to determine the causes of the tragedy, but ruled out “the foreseeability of the event, negligence or imprudence.”

“During the operation organic material and some objects were found. Everything was recovered, transported to the valley and will be analyzed”specified the source.

For the Italian authorities, global warming and a wave of high temperatures recorded this year hastened the melting of the glacier.

They also explained that they discovered accumulated water under the ice, which is why it is feared that it will continue to collapse.
