Death at UPM: the inspector who knew more than the internet and had all the answers

“Every time someone needed something it was easier to ask Eduardo than to look for him on the internet”. This was recalled by the president of the Association of Labor Inspectors (AITU), Nestor Pereiraa Eduardo Ezcurrathe labor ministry inspector (MTSS) that passed away this Monday on the second floor of UPM, in Paso de los Toros. That day, a Russian worker who worked on the construction site died after falling from a height of 65 meters. About 15 minutes later, Ezcurra went up to the platform, along with a technician from the pulp mill, to inspect the place, but he lost his balance and although he was assisted at the scene, he also died.

Ezcurra was preventionist technician and was part of the team in charge of controlling the environmental conditions of the companies that depend on the General Labor Inspection (Igtss) of the Ministry of Labor. At UPM there is a permanent team of six inspectors that rotates. Four of the area of environmental conditions (safety and health) and two dedicated to general working conditions (employment and salary documentation).

“He had all the technical knowledge to be an inspector, but apart from that gift of people that gives a special plus,” Pereira mentioned. “He was always willing to help. Wherever he was there was always a smile, and also an answer for an inspector who had any questions, ”he pointed out.

Pereira indicated that the inspectors manage a occupational health and safety regulations that appears in decrees, conventions of the International Labor Organization (ILO), but also in documents of other organizations. “Even resolutions that are sometimes not found in the Official Gazette. And it was always easier to ask Eduardo because he always had that documentation, that resolution, or that article of the decree that you needed”, he related.

Ezcurra was also a person of consultation when a presentation had to be made at AITU activities or in training. “You asked him: Do you remember such an event? And yes, he remembered. in another time cut out the newspapers and had articles on a particular topic. Photos too,” she added.

Pereira joined the MTSS in 2008 and Ezcurra had been there for many years. he was thinking start the paperwork to retire, given its long history. “For us it was going to be a loss that Eduardo retired; but this is much worse”, affirmed the inspector.

Yesterday the wake and burial of Ezcurra was held in Montevideo. Through a statement, the MTSS lamented the death.

This Wednesday, the MTSS will pay tribute in his assembly hall.
