The Brazilian Women’s Handball Team made history at the 24th edition of the Summer Deaflympics. With an impressive 24-15 victory over Kenya, the girls from Brazil won the first medal in the history of the sport in an Olympic competition. The Sports Gymnasium of the University of the city of Caxias do Sul received a large audience that supported the team from start to finish.
The start of the match was well balanced and, until the first five minutes, the Kenyans were ahead. From the 10th minute, Brazil was right on the court and asserted its technical and physical superiority. Kenya tried to react at the beginning of the second stage, but the Brazilians managed to maintain a good advantage and confirmed the victory in the final 10 minutes.
The top scorer of Brazil, Fernanda Caporal, said she expected a good performance from the team in this Deaf Olympiad. “We trained a lot, even when it was necessary to train at a distance. We knew we could go far. We got the medal, I’m very happy and I’m even speechless. Now is the time to rest and be reunited with the family.”
With a bronze medal in handball and women’s football, as Japan gave up competing, Brazil reached six bronzes in total in the general medal table, surpassing the five medals won at the 2017 Deaflympics in Turkey.
