The first achievement was a bronze won by Alexandre Fernandes in the judo category up to 90 kg. The 33-year-old carioca occupies a special place in the history of the Summer Deaflympics, as he was the first Brazilian to secure a medal in the competition’s history, in the 2009 edition in Taipei (Taiwan).

The other Brazilian medal came in swimming, and it was also a bronze, with Guilherme Maia from Santos in the 100-meter freestyle event with a time of 52.73.

For the 33-year-old athlete, the achievement had a special flavor, as it was achieved with the presence of his mother, Andrea, in the stands: “My mother is my reference. She was my first swimming teacher and is still my biggest supporter.”

Guilherme is the greatest Brazilian medalist in the history of the Summer Deaflympics, with six achievements (one gold, one silver and four bronzes).

Volleyball victories

Brazil also won in volleyball matches. The men’s team beat France and the women’s team beat Mexico. In women’s basketball, the Brazilian team was beaten by Poland from 10 to 125, while the men’s team lost from 45 to 92 to Ukraine. Another setback for Brazil was in women’s handball, from 18 to 35 for Turkey.

men’s football

In men’s football, Brazil beat Holland 1-0. In addition, the Brazilian team benefited from a decision by the International Committee for Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) to change the result of its debut game, against Cameroon.

After understanding that the team from the African country broke the regulations, the entity decided to change the score of the match, which had been a 3-2 victory for Cameroon (going to 3-0 for Brazil), and remove the points from Cameroon.

With that, Brazil now has six points and became third in Group B, behind Iran and Italy, who also have 6 points, but with better goal difference.
