The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes, is expected to speak out this Friday (17), before the Federal Supreme Court (STF), about the reasons that led the city hall to build a wall in Cracolândia, confining people there. in a vulnerable situation.
The subpoena, giving a 24-hour deadline for the mayor to demonstrate, was determined by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, on Thursday (16), as a matter of urgency.
Around 40 meters long and with metal railings, the wall was built between May and June last year on Rua General Couto Magalhães, located in the Santa Ifigênia neighborhood, in a triangular area.
The STF’s determination originates from an action filed by PSOL parliamentarians, based on guidelines from the National Policy for the Homeless Population.
The city council made a public statement in a statement, arguing that the wall was installed in 2024, in an area where metal fences already existed to close off a public area. According to the city hall, the change was made to “protect people in vulnerable situations, as well as residents and pedestrians, and not for confinement”.
Cracolândia is the name given to an area occupied by people in vulnerable situations, mostly made up of drug addicts and drug traffickers, generally crackin the center of the city of São Paulo.
